Solar power project to be commissioned in Hela

A Solar Power Project at Yangome Village in Komo Hulia Electorate, Hela province is ready to be commissioned on 16th September 2026.

The Yangome solar project in Hulia LLG is delivered by the Hela Provincial Government in partnership with Arafura Energies Ltd.

It will run alongside two 2Mega Wats (MW) gas turbines already installed at Hides in partnership with ExxonMobil. Together, the 3MW of new generation is expected to end years of darkness for many Hela communities.

Hela governor, Philip Undialu said his people have lived for too long in darkness, without reliable power.

“On September 16th, we will switch on cheaper, reliable and sustainable electricity for Hela. This is our 50th Anniversary gift to our people," Undialu said.

Governor Undialu said the project aligns with the National Government’s broader policy to transfer the management of C-Centres to Provincial Governments and the private sector.

He said the model offers a practical solution to strengthen electricity services and ease pressure on the struggling PNG Power system.

"Through Hela Provincial Government and Arafura Energies Ltd, we are taking control of our energy future. This initiative will ensure our people, businesses, schools and health facilities have access to power that is affordable and dependable," he said.

Hela governor said the power rollout is about more than just lights. He said it will create new economic opportunities, support small businesses, improve service delivery in schools and hospitals, and lay the foundation for future industries in the province.

"For Hela, this is more than a power project. It is about opportunity. Hela will never be the same again," he said.
