New Wapulaka Junior High double classroom nears completion

Construction of a new double classroom at Wapulaka Junior High School in Magarima, Hela, is scheduled for completion later this month.

The project fully supported by a K200,000 allocation from the Magarima District Development Authority [DDA], is designed to relieve overcrowded learning spaces and improve conditions for students.

Speaking to NBC News, Magarima DDA chief executive officer Simon Olaija reaffirmed the authority's commitment to advancing local learning facilities.

​"Education remains one of our top priorities," Olaija said. "The K200,000 allocated for this double classroom at Wapulaka Junior High is part of our ongoing effort to upgrade school infrastructure throughout the district."

​He said the project is part of a much broader, long-term initiative. Even prior to recent administrative shifts, when the body functioned as the Komo-Magarima DDA, the authority consistently funded the construction of classrooms and staff housing across the district.

​The CEO also expressed gratitude towards the provincial government for targeting teacher accommodation, a persistent issue that affected teachers.

​"On behalf of the DDA, I want to sincerely thank Hela Governor Philip Undialu for funding vital infrastructure, particularly the 8-in-1 staff housing units," Olaija said.

"Housing has long been a major barrier. Delivering proper living quarters allows our teachers to settle in securely and focus entirely on providing quality education to our students."

​He emphasized that the pioneer Magarima Secondary School continues to receive sustained financial backing from the DDA.

This ongoing support aims to expand facility capacity and modernise resources to accommodate the district's steadily growing student population.
