East Sepik holds tribute service for Rabaul boat tragedy victims

The East Sepik community gathered on Saturday to honor and remember the 27 lives lost in the recent tragic boat incident in Rabaul, East New Britain Province.

A tribute mass was held on Saturday evening, 1st August 2026, at Marist beach, where men, women and children gathered to to pay their respects.

The service was conducted by Father Bernard Burite from Christ the King Church, Wiruwi Parish, and Reverend Robert Heni from Wewak United Church.

During the prayer for the victims, Reverend Heni reminded the congregation that life is uncertain and encouraged people to dedicate their lives to God.

“As we dedicate the 27 lives lost, please remember us who are alive on earth. May this tribute also remind those of us who are living that only God knows the future, and that we must always dedicate our lives to Him in everything we do,” Reverend Heni said.

Following the service, lanterns were raised into the night sky, while 27 wreaths were laid on the sea as a symbol of remembrance for each of the lives lost in the tragedy.

The solemn tribute brought together families, children and community members who gathered along the Wewak shoreline in prayer, reflection and solidarity with those affected by the incident.

The glowing lanterns above the shoreline and the wreaths placed on the sea marked a powerful moment of remembrance, as the East Sepik community joined the nation in mourning and honoring the victims of the Rabaul boat tragedy.
