Madang government purchases 4 bailey bridges from China
The Madang Provincial Government has purchased four bailey bridges directly from China at a total cost of K2.7 million.
Governor Ramsey Pariwa was in Nanjin City of Jiangsu Province in China a few days ago where he presented a cheque worth K2.7 million to purchase the four bailey steel bridges that will ease infrastructure challenges and improve transportation access in rural parts of Madang Province.
The payment was made in PNG Kina to Jiangsu Bailey Steel Bridge Company Limited on June 17, 2026.
The cheque payment was for four (4) bridges to be built at Warup costing K603,000, Nankina- K903,000, both in Raikos District; Wanang bridge in Middle-Ramu- K929, 000; and Goro bridge in Transgogol LLG in Madang District- K253,000.
Governor Pariwa did not mince words when he highlighted that a firm in PNG that sells steel bailey bridges makes 200- 400 per cent profit, while in China, it is a lot less.
"For example, Goro bridge which we are purchasing now at K253,000, comparing that to PNG it is sold at K2.9 million," Mr. Pariwa stated.
He further remarked that the cost of purchasing one bailey steel bridge in PNG can be able to purchase four bridges in China.
Mr. Pariwa expressed his appreciation and thanked the Chinese bailey bridge manufacturer for giving the opportunity to the Madang Provincial Government to partner with them.
"It's 50 years on now from our independence and PNG, including Madang Province, need to make wise decisions in using our scares and limited financial resources for the greater impact and benefit of our people," Mr. Pariwa stated.
The visit by Governor Pariwa to China also paved way for the signing of a commercial agreement between the Madang Provincial Government and the bailey bridge manufacturer for the core bridge products engagement and its technology.
The agreement will run for two [2] years to be renewed at the end of every second year to see more bailey bridges are supplied to Madang Province to meet the road and bridge infrastructure needs of the people in all the rural LLGs.
"My people deserve better, and we will not sit back and see them continue to suffer," Governor Pariwa stated.
"The arrangement to purchase the bailey bridges from China is a step in the right direction and I thank the Provincial Executive Council for endorsing this way forward," the Governor added.
The arrival of the first 4 bailey bridges from China will soon be launched together with a new bailey bridge program for Madang Province.
