Maprik school incident: 16 suspects surrender
Police have confirmed that 16 suspects involved in the recent violence at Maprik Secondary School have surrendered with the assistance of community leaders and the town mayor.
The suspects were escorted and locked up in police cells, with the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) commencing interrogation and formal processes immediately. Authorities say any remaining suspects will be pursued as investigations continue.
East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Christopher Tamari commended the Kwatgu and town community leaders for their unity and partnership in ensuring the surrender and safe transfer of suspects to Yambi cells.
A final gathering with leaders and community representatives will take place tomorrow, paving the way for the school to resume normal classes.
PPC Tamari further acknowledged the strong cooperation of community leaders in fighting crime and safeguarding the area of operation.
"Your support has been vital in bringing suspects to justice and restoring order.” Tamari said.
All police units involved were also commended for their tireless efforts in restoring peace and harmony to the institution.
