Talasea MP Freddie Kumai has called for an investigation into the operations of foreign-owned businesses in West New Britain Province.

He raised the matter in Parliament this afternoon following growing concerns from local people that many jobs and business opportunities are being taken over by foreign companies.

Mr Kumai directed a series of questions to International Trade and Investment Minister Richard Maru, asking whether the government was aware of the concerns being raised by communities in the province.

The concerns are allegedly linked to foreign companies associated with Sime Darby Oils, the operator of New Britain Palm Oil.

Talasea MP Freddie Kumai described this as systematic displacement of Papua New Guinean businesses.

He's called for a thorough investigation into this from the relevant agencies, International Trade and Investment, Internal Revenue Commission, Labor Department, Customs, and Immigration.

Minister for International Trade and Investment Richard Mary when responding , says he's office is not aware of these allegations.
