Alotau's northcoast highway will see a stronger bypass built at the washout to allow for safe traffic into town in the next few months.

Alotau MP Ricky Morris recently announced K136, 000 to support in making the temporary bypass stronger while there are plans for a more permanent fix.

The road section just before the incline to Huhuna has been completely washed away during April's Cyclone Maila, stalling traffic for few days.

An intial bypass built right after was also washed away and a second one is in current use, Morris says the funding support will go towards installing multi-plate culverts to reinforce this bypass, still temporary but enough to hold.

It is understood the district, along with support of the Dept of Works and Highways, are working to secure a permament bridge to be installed there at a cost of K2million.

Meantime, Morris adds, the district has also captured road works in their Disaster Report, factoring in the Watunou to Huhuna Road section to cost up to K5million to upgrade and maintain culverts, drainage and more.
