PNG and Timor-Leste agree to open embassies
Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste have agreed to open embassies in each other’s countries following bilateral talks held in Port Moresby today.
Prime Minister James Marape and Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta met at Melanesian Haus on the sidelines of the Melanesian Oceans Summit currently underway in Port Moresby.
Today's discussions focused on strengthening trade, diplomatic relations and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Prime Minister Marape welcomed President Ramos-Horta and described him as a respected global leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
“Mr President, we welcome you to our country,” Mr Marape said.
“We are not living in isolation. We relate to nations, and we share better together.”
Mr Marape confirmed that both governments are now interested in opening embassies in each other’s countries to improve cooperation and strengthen relations.
“His Excellency Ramos-Horta has indicated his nation’s interest to open an embassy here, and I am also interested in opening an embassy there,” the Prime Minister said.
The leaders also discussed regional cooperation and shared interests as Pacific and oil-and-gas producing nations.
President Ramos-Horta has also given his support for Papua New Guinea’s bid to become a full member of ASEAN.
Prime Minister Marape said PNG and Timor-Leste are stronger when working together, especially on issues such as ocean protection, climate change and regional development.
“As small economies and island nations, our voice on the global stage is stronger when we stand together,” he said.
President Ramos-Horta is among regional leaders attending the Melanesian Oceans Summit which began today in Port Moresby.
Prime Minister Marape said he also plans to visit Timor-Leste at a later date as both countries continue to strengthen their partnership.
