A dental awareness program has started at Gon Kambua Primary School in the Kundiawa-Gembogl District, with plans to reach more than 140 schools and over 200,000 students across Simbu Province.

The program is led by dental staff from Sir Joseph Nombri Memorial Kundiawa General Hospital, working in partnership with Colgate Palmolive. It aims to teach students how to properly care for their teeth and understand the dangers of poor oral hygiene.

Lead dental officer Dr Sails Tumun said there has been a concerning increase in oral cancer cases in recent years.

“We must educate students as early as possible to look after their teeth,” he said.

Dr Tumun also urged students to avoid alcohol, smoking, and betel nut, warning that these habits can lead to serious health problems, including oral cancer.

Resident Dental Specialist Dr Cynthia Gabriel showed students the correct way to brush their teeth using a toothbrush and toothpaste. She stressed the importance of keeping teeth and gums healthy to prevent long-term problems.

Event coordinator at Gon Kambua Primary School, Ms Atomo, thanked the hospital team and Colgate Palmolive for bringing the program to the school.

“It’s important for primary students to understand the value of their teeth and the risks of not taking care of them,” she said.

She also repeated warnings about the dangers of alcohol, betel nut, and tobacco.

The program ended with students receiving free toothpaste and toothbrushes donated by Colgate-Palmolive.
