PNG record two straight wins, maintain unbeaten run in Aussie national championships

The PNG Indigenous Team continue to assert their dominance at the 2026 National Indigenous Cricket Championships, recording back-to-back victories in Round 4 and Round 5 to remain unbeaten in the tournament.

With four matches played and four wins secured, PNG now sits in a strong position as they build momentum heading into the remaining fixtures of the competition.

PNG delivered a disciplined all-round performance to restrict South Australia Indigenous Men to 6/114 in their 20 overs. PNG’s bowling with Alei Nao (1/17), John Kariko (1/23), Igo Morea (1/11), and Assadollah Vala (1/5) all claiming wickets. In the field, Sese Bau stood out with two catches and a run out, while Michael Charlie also contributed to a run out. Patrick Nou and Tony Ura added to the effort with crucial catches.

With the batting side, PNG chased confidently, reaching 3/115 in just 12.2 overs.

Sese Bau anchored the innings with an unbeaten 52 making him Player of the Match, while Tony Ura’s explosive 40 off 15 balls set the platform for a commanding win with more than seven overs remaining.

In round 5 PNG defeated Northern Territory by 8 wickets.

PNG carried their strong form into Round 5, producing another composed performance to defeat Northern Territory Indigenous (Men) by 8 wickets.

The bowling attack once again laid the foundation, restricting Northern Territory to 4/108 in 20 overs. Alei Nao was outstanding with 2/11, supported by John Kariko (1/4) and Michael Charlie (1/19). PNG’s fielding remained sharp, with catches taken by Tony Ura, John Kariko, Sese Bau, and Igo Morea.

Northern Territory’s innings was anchored by Kael Newcombe with an unbeaten 40, but consistent pressure from PNG ensured the total remained within reach.

PNG’s batting unit then delivered a controlled chase, finishing on 2/111 in 17.3 overs to seal their second win of the day. PNG head coach McCaskill praised the team’s consistency and effort across both matches.

“I’m really pleased with how the team are playing. We have been training hard leading into this opportunity and the energy whilst here has been outstanding. Our batting, fielding and bowling have been terrific and we are playing to our potential,” McCaskill said.

“We have challenging games to close the series against WA and NSW. Strong performances in these matches will have us well placed heading home for a training block before Japan World Cup qualifiers.”

The results highlight PNG’s balance, discipline, and consistency across the team, reinforcing their status as a leading contender at NICC 2026.

The PNG Indigenous Team now looks ahead to the remaining fixtures of the tournament, aiming to maintain their unbeaten run and continue their strong campaign in Mackay, NICC this year.
