BFPNG in race against time for Glasgow Games
The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea [BFPNG] is racing against the clock to ensure a formidable women’s 3x3 contingent is prepared for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
BFPNG President David Peter confirmed that the federation, in partnership with the PNG Olympic Committee [PNGOC], is working to assemble a final roster ahead of the Glasgow Games, scheduled for July 23 to August 2.
Peter revealed a rigorous new training regime designed to sharpen the squad’s tactical edge to meet the demands of the international stage.
"We are currently planning for the team to train five days a week, with one of those sessions dedicated specifically to game-based simulation," Peter told NBC News.
"Our goal is to prepare a team that can compete at a whole new level, both physically and mentally. We are focused on assembling players who can maintain high standards, perform consistently under pressure, and compete at the highest level internationally."
While a top 20 list of players was extracted from the global 3x3 ranking system, the selection process has faced hurdles. Many identified athletes were unable to attend initial testing due to work and study commitments.
Consequently, BFPNG and PNGOC are now finalizing dates for trials to identify players in peak condition who are hungry to represent the country.
Despite the challenges, Peter is confident in the Pacific DNA of the PNG side to overcome larger opponents.
"We know every team is going to come with their own strengths, but we will do what we are good at which is endurance, speed, and the PNG style of play," Peter said.
"Height is an obstacle we need to manage, but it’s in our DNA to take on anyone, anywhere, regardless of what they bring to the court."
While PNGOC is covering a significant portion of the costs for Commonwealth Games participants, BFPNG must still bridge a financial gap.
The federation also issued a call for support from government and corporate organisations.
"Funding is one of the biggest challenges. Support from corporate partners or the government would go a long way in ensuring the women’s 3x3 team has the best possible preparation," Peter said.
PNG is among 12 nations in host's Scotland, Australia, England, Canada, India, Malaysia, South Africa, Nigeria, New Zealand, Jamaica and Kenya.
The team is expected to be finalized following the upcoming trials before departing for Scotland mid-year.
