Manus inmates make historic debut in Governor’s Cup soccer tournament
Sixteen inmates from the Manus Correctional Institution made history this year by participating in the Manus Governor’s Cup for the first time.
The detainees were active competitors in the soccer tournament held last week at the Prince William Oval in Lorengau.
This initiative aimed to integrate the detainees into the community through sports, with all affiliation and player fees covered by the office of the Manus Governor.
Representing the institution as CS Tarangau FC, the squad consisted of sixteen classified low-risk inmates and five staff members.
Manus CS Commander, Chief Inspector David Yakamano, stated that the program is a core component of the institution’s rehabilitation efforts.
He noted that the primary goals of participation were to promote physical fitness, teamwork, discipline and positive social interactions.
“Participation in community-based sporting activities supports behavioral reform and enhances the detainees’ sense of inclusion within society,” said Commander Yakamano.
To ensure the team’s presence at the public venue, the institution implemented strict oversight protocols to balance community engagement with public safety.
“All necessary security measures and administrative arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safe and orderly participation of the detainees.”
The institution further emphasized that events like these are vital for fostering community engagement and providing those in custody with constructive avenues for personal development.
