Prime Minister James Marape has congratulated National Rugby League [NRL] star Alex Johnston following his historic achievement of becoming the highest Try-Scorer in NRL history, reaching 213 career tries and surpassing the long-standing record previously held by Ken Irvine since 1973.

Johnston reached the historic milestone during Friday night’s NRL match on 13 March 2026 at Allianz
Stadium in Sydney, Australia, the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Sydney Roosters.

Marape said Papua New Guinea celebrates this historic milestone with great pride, recognising Johnston’s PNG heritage and connection to the country through his mother’s side of the family, which traces back to Lumi in West Sepik Province.

Johnston has represented both PNG and Australia at representative level, having played 12
Tests for the PNG Kumuls so far.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to
Kumul No. 294 Alex Johnston for this remarkable and historic achievement,” Marape said.

“Breaking a record that has stood for more than fifty years is no small feat. Alex Johnston has demonstrated extraordinary skill, dedication, and consistency throughout his career, and Papua New Guinea is immensely proud of his success.”

The Prime Minister noted that Johnston’s achievement represents not only a personal milestone but also a moment of pride for many Papua New Guineans who passionately follow Rugby League as the nation’s most beloved sport.

“Rugby league is part of the heartbeat of our nation. When a player with Papua New Guinean heritage rises to such heights in the sport’s premier competition, it inspires millions of young boys and girls across our country who dream of achieving greatness in Rugby League.”

PM Marape also acknowledged the congratulatory Message delivered by Australian Prime
Minister Anthony Albanese, highlighting the shared sporting culture between Papua New Guinea and
Australia.

“I join Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and our Australian friends in congratulating Alex
Johnston. His success reflects the strong sporting ties between our two nations and the deep love for Rugby League shared by Australians and Papua New Guineans alike.”

The Prime Minister further highlighted that Johnston’s record is symbolic of the growing presence and
influence of players of Pacific Island and Papua New Guinean heritage in international Rugby League.

“Alex Johnston’s achievement shows the extraordinary talent that exists across the Pacific Region. His success reminds us that with discipline, faith, and perseverance, our young people can compete and excel on the world stage.”

Prime Minister Marape also emphasised that Johnston’s accomplishment comes at a time when Papua New Guinea is working toward expanding its presence in professional Rugby League, including the preparations now of having PNG Franchise Team the PNG Chiefs to enter the NRL competition from 2028.

“As Papua New Guinea continues its journey toward greater participation in the NRL and international Rugby League, role models like Alex Johnston play an important role in inspiring the next generation of players from our country.”

Prime Minister Marape concluded by wishing Johnston continued success in his career.

“Alex Johnston has etched his name permanently into Rugby League history. Papua New Guinea celebrates with him and wishes him continued success in the seasons ahead. You have made our country and our region proud.”
