Following the successful completion of last year's competition, preparations are now underway for the 2026 School Rugby League season in Western Highlands Province.

The competition recorded the highest number of paying and registered school teams in the country, marking a major achievement for rugby league development in the province.

All participating players were officially registered through the My Sideline system, a move that was recognized by the PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) for its strong compliance and organization.

Chairman of the Baby Eagles and School Rugby League Competition in Western Highlands, James Meninga, says he remains committed to running the competition again this year despite some challenges faced after last season.

Meninga said funds from last year’s competition are yet to be received, which are needed to settle outstanding bills.

“Despite the delay in funding, we will not stop the development of school rugby league in the province,” he said.

He said the Western Highlands School Rugby League competition plays an important role in identifying and developing future rugby league stars from the province.

To kick start the 2026 program, the School Rugby League administration has already begun grassroots development activities across the province.

These include coaching clinics for teachers and young players, as well as the donation of rugby balls to primary schools throughout Western Highlands.

Meninga said the activities are currently being carried out in primary schools this week, with the program set to continue to secondary schools across the province next week.

“The aim is to strengthen grassroots rugby league development, build the skills of young players, and prepare schools for this year’s competition,” Meninga said.
