Vandalism threatens highway in Hela
The Department of Works and Highways [DoWH] in Hela Province is being urged to investigate and take immediate action over the ongoing tampering and destruction of public infrastructure along the Highlands Highway between Tigibi and Ambua Gap.
Reports indicate that some individuals living along the corridor are deliberately interfering with road structures, causing damage that threatens the safety of travellers and the long-term usability of the vital transport route.
Ipwenz Construction Limited Project Manager for Hela, Rodney Ipape, said the highway is not just a provincial asset but a national government investment meant to serve the people of Hela and the wider population of Papua New Guinea.
He condemned acts of vandalism such as dismantling drainage systems, damaging culverts, removing guardrails and interfering with other critical road infrastructure.
“These actions undermine the services meant to benefit local communities and jeopardise long-term development,” Ipape said.
He urged the Department of Works to work closely with local leaders, law enforcement and community representatives to address the issue before it worsens.
Ipape stressed that public infrastructure must be protected and respected because it ensures safe travel, supports economic activity and contributes to sustainable growth in the province.
He said those responsible for damaging government property should be identified and held accountable.
Attempts to get comments from police were unsuccessful.
