The Bank of South Pacific (BSP) Financial Group has officially reopened its Porgera Branch in Enga Province, nearly one year after tribal conflict in the region forced a total suspension of services.

The reopening underscores BSP’s commitment to providing essential banking services to rural populations, even in the face of significant operational challenges.

The reopening ceremony this week, was attended by high-level representatives from BSP management, New Porgera Limited [NPL], the Enga Provincial Government, and the Porgera-Paiela District Development Authority [DDA].

BSP Head of Corporate Banking, David Bishop, said the bank’s mission is to ensure equal financial opportunities for all customers to prosper. This sentiment was echoed by Highlands Area Manager John Tomba, who offered high praise for those who protected the facility during the unrest.

"I want to thank the Police, PNG Defense Force personnel, and the local community for protecting the bank and its properties during the tribal fights," Tomba said. "This act is commendable. I now challenge the community to take ownership and look after the bank and the staff who are here to serve you."

The restoration of banking services is seen as a cornerstone for the region's economic recovery in 2026. James McTiernan, General Manager of New Porgera Limited, said the company was a primary driver behind the push to reopen the branch.

"NPL wants to give back more to the community in 2026, and restoring essential services like banking was a top priority," McTiernan said.

The Porgera-Paiela DDA, led by local MP and Chairman Gidron Maso Karipe, was also acknowledged for its vital role in facilitating the return of the bank to the district.
