Auckland FC wary of Hekari ‘passion’ as OFC Pro League round 2 kicks off in POM this weekend
Despite a flawless, undefeated run in the opening round of the OFC Pro League, ladder leaders Auckland FC have arrived in the capital with their guards up, braced for a fierce challenge from Papua New Guinea’s Hekari FC.
The New Zealand side touched down in Port Moresby yesterday, carrying the momentum of three straight wins against South Island United [3-0], Vanuatu United [3-1], and Bula FC [1-0]. However, the visitors are under no illusions about the difficulty of the task ahead as they prepare for a hostile Round 2 schedule at the Santos National Football Stadium.
Auckland defender Michael den Heijer expressed his satisfaction with their early form but acknowledged the rising stakes.
"We are very happy with the three wins. Top of the table is a great place to start," den Heijer said.
While den Heijer is a veteran of Pacific football, this trip marks his first time on PNG soil. He admitted he is eager to experience the legendary atmosphere of a Hekari United home crowd this Saturday.
"I’ve been to many of the Pacific Islands, but this is my first time in Papua New Guinea. I am really excited to see the passion for football here," den Heijer said. "Hekari has a massive following, and I know there will be a big crowd on Saturday. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there."
At 29, the defender says launch of the OFC Pro League is a dream come true for many players in the region.
"I am turning 30 this year, and for a long time I have dreamed about playing professional football in this region. To see it happening now is very exciting," he said.
Auckland FC’s Port Moresby campaign begins this Saturday against Hekari FC, followed by Tahiti United on February 3rd and the Solomon Kings on February 7th.
