PNG Power and GGGI sign agreement to grow renewable energy
PNG Power Limited [PPL] and the Global Green Growth Institute [GGGI] have signed a new agreement to help Papua New Guinea use more clean and reliable energy.
The Memorandum of Understanding [MOU] will run for three years. It will help both organisations work together to bring more solar power to communities, find funding for clean energy projects, and train PNG Power staff to improve their skills in renewable energy and project management.
Some of the key activities include a nationwide solar rollout, a study to look at building a solar farm in Kokopo, East New Britain, and special training programs for PPL workers.
PNG Power CEO Paul Bayly said the partnership will support the country’s move toward cleaner and better power.
“This partnership is about powering sustainable growth for every Papua New Guinean,” Mr Bayly said.
“Together with GGGI, we can unlock new opportunities to deliver clean energy to communities across the country.”
GGGI Country Representative Mohammad Ali Shaikh said the agreement also supports PNG’s goals under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
“PNG is aligning its energy future with the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This collaboration will turn green growth strategies into action,” he said.
Both organisations say the agreement shows their commitment to honesty, sustainability, and new ideas, and will help make clean energy a strong part of PNG’s future development.
