Hela Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Michael Welly has issued a strong call for partnership to the 81 newly elected ward councilors of the Tari Pori District. Speaking shortly after their induction last week, PPC Welly stressed that a close working relationship between the councilors and the police service is critical for effectively maintaining law and order throughout the province.

He emphasized that the ward councilors, as the direct representatives of the people in their communities, are now central to the local security framework. This approach marks a significant shift from past practices, establishing a direct channel for communication and cooperation.

"The councilors are the eyes and ears of the community," PPC Welly stated. "By working hand-in-hand with the police, we can address issues swiftly and proactively, unlike in the past when coordination was a challenge."

The PPC expressed considerable optimism regarding this new partnership. He noted that the newly elected body comprises mostly young men who are entering their roles with a fresh mandate. PPC Welly believes their energy and local knowledge will be instrumental in fostering peace and unity within their respective wards.

To ensure this partnership is practical and effective, PPC Welly urged the councilors to provide their complete contact information, including mobile numbers and alternative contact details during the district's upcoming second LLG meeting.

“This register will enable police to immediately contact the relevant ward councilor as soon as a law and order issue is reported in their community, ensuring a rapid, localized response,” he stated.

PPC Welly extended his gratitude to the people of Hela Province. He commended them for the noticeable positive change in their actions and attitudes. He highlighted that from the recent 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations through to the entire LLG Elections period, the province reported no major law and order incidents, signaling a maturing and responsible community spirit.
