Cutters plot return to Digicel ExxonMobil Cup
The Kimbe Cutters will not take part in the 2026 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, but discussions are underway to pave the way for their return to the country’s premier rugby league competition.
The Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition [PNGNRLC], together with the Kimbe Cutters franchise board and management, have agreed to collaborate on ensuring the club meets all compliance requirements for re-entry.
Cutters chairman Steven Raphael and his management team met in Port Moresby this week with PNGNRLC chairman Adrian Chow, PNG Rugby Football League [PNGRFL] chief executive officer Stanley Hondina, and PNGRFL general manager for Performance and Pathways Tony Archer.
Raphael expressed appreciation for the meeting and said the club sought clarification on the specific compliance criteria for franchise licensing. He acknowledged there were areas, particularly in management, that needed to be strengthened.
“The franchise board and management have agreed to identify and work with specific individuals, in collaboration with the PNGNRLC, who will be mentored and groomed to effectively manage our development and pathways programs,” Raphael said.
“This partnership aims to ensure that our children progressing through the junior levels and the Kimbe Cutters pathways are well-supported. We sincerely appreciate the PNGNRLC’s assurance of professional guidance and support, which will contribute to the long-term growth and sustainability of our franchise and the future of rugby league in our province.”
PNGNRLC chairman Adrian Chow commended the growth of the Cutters since their entry in 2019 and said the competition’s standards were continuously improving, not only in on-field performance but also in management and administration.
“For PNGNRLC, the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup is more than a competition, it is setting the national standard for the delivery of rugby league in PNG,” Chow said.
“We will ensure compliance across all clubs and push for franchise growth in administration, player welfare, and revenue opportunities. Participating franchises must align with this growth and invest in their pathways and club development.”
Chow also encouraged the people and businesses of West New Britain to continue supporting the Cutters as the club works towards meeting the requirements for its return.
Meanwhile, the 2026 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup will maintain 12 teams, with the inclusion of the Kandes from Madang as the newest franchise.
