Japanese artist leads mural project celebrating PNG’s 50th anniversary in Goroka
Renowned Japanese artist Miyazaki Kensuke has brought colour and culture together in Goroka, leading the creation of a vibrant mural to celebrate Papua New Guinea’s 50th anniversary of Independence.
The mural, unveiled at Ela Motors Goroka, was officially opened by Japan’s Ambassador to PNG, Hisanobu Mochizuki, alongside Eastern Highlands Governor Simon Sia and Ela Motors chief executive officer Masaru Mikami.
Miyazaki worked closely with more than 20 students from Goroka International School, blending Japanese artistry with Papua New Guinean cultural themes to create a piece that reflects unity, innovation, and community spirit.
Ambassador Mochizuki praised the artist’s work, describing it as a heartfelt tribute to Papua New Guinea and commending Miyazaki’s philosophy of involving local communities in his art.
“Miyazaki’s art is renowned worldwide, and his collaboration with students and local people has brought this mural to life,” the Ambassador said. “The flowers and nature scenes were inspired by the people of Goroka and their environment.”
Ambassador Mochizuki said the project represents the strong and enduring friendship between Japan and Papua New Guinea and wished the country well for the next 50 years.
"We are grateful for the collaboration between artists and locals. I wish the people of Papua New Guinea and Eastern Highlands all the best for the coming year,” he said.
The mural now stands as a symbol of creativity and cross-cultural partnership, showcasing how art can unite nations through shared vision and community engagement.
