Nipa Rugby League concludes 2025 Season on a high note
The Nipa Rugby League brought its 2025 season to a close last weekend at Nipa Station in the Southern Highlands Province, marking a breakthrough achievement for the newly affiliated competition.
The grand final was filled with strong competition, outstanding flexibility, and spirited support from the local community.
In a nail-biting Premier Division finale, the Iceman BK Broncos emerged victorious, sealing the much-wanted championship title and a cash prize of K10,000. They secured a hard-fought 6-4 win over a determined DMT Upper Nipa Bulldogs side.
The Bulldogs drew first blood, registering the opening try of the match in the first half. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert, leaving them with four points on the board.
The Broncos responded with determination in the second half, leveling the score with a try of their own and edging ahead after a successful conversion brought their total to six points.
The Broncos held onto their slender lead for the remainder of the match, weathering persistent attacks from the Bulldogs until the final whistle sealed their victory. As runners-up, the DMT Upper Nipa Bulldogs walked away with a well-earned K6,000 in prize money.
The junior men’s division was equally competitive, with the Jet Haren Manjals showcasing their depth and skill against the ES Mountain Eagles. The Manjals delivered a composed performance to secure a 10-4 victory, claiming the K6,000 cash prize, while the Eagles received K3,000 as runners-up.
In the women’s division, the DMT Omu Nong and KKT Karinz United delivered a spirited and evenly-matched contest that ended in a 4-4 draw. After a review based on overall competition points, KKT Karinz United were crowned the women’s champions and awarded K4,000, while DMT Omu Nong received K2,000 for their commendable performance.
The newly registered affiliate under the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL), the Nipa Rugby League’s successfully ended the 2025 season. League officials described this milestone as a promising indicator for the future of rugby league development at the grassroots level.
The Nipa Rugby League management extended their appreciation to the Nipa-Kutubu District Development Authority [DDA], led by Minister for Defence Dr Billy Joseph, as well as Governor William Powi, for their support as the major sponsors. The management also acknowledged other partners and contributors whose efforts were vital in ensuring the league’s successful season.
Special appreciation was shared for Junior Emmanuel Tol, Chairman of the Nipa Rugby League, whose relentless commitment to registering and guiding the league was instrumental in its achievements.
League official Emmanuel Gigmai stated, “The outstanding completion of this year’s competition is a demonstration to the passion, leadership, and unity of our people. "Rugby League here is truly more than just a game; it is a pathway for community growth, social unity, and youth development."
With renewed interest and a solid foundation, the Nipa Rugby League now looks forward to the 2026 season, aiming to build upon this year’s achievements and further cultivate rugby league talent and participation across the district.
