Justice Ellis extends deadline for Wapenamanda Peace deal

Justice Graham Ellis has granted a four-day extension to finalise a peace agreement over the recent tribal fight in the Wapenmanda District, which was originally due today.

The extension follows a letter appointing Deputy Provincial Administrator for Social Services, Henry Kapao, and Chief Superintendent Joseph Tondop as mediators.

The court ordered that Danny Katie, representing the Yakuman Tribe, and local MP Miki Kaeok, representing the Yangakun Tribe, take turns meeting with the mediators on Monday to finalise the peace agreement.

Justice Ellis urged the leaders to comply with the mediators’ directions and said the meeting must be held behind closed doors, with no public or media access.

A final peace agreement is expected by October 29.
