Papua New Guinea’s very own is now officially recognized as Saint Peter ToRot in the Catholic church, following his historic canonization today, together with six others, in Rome.

He was officially proclaimed a saint, infront of a packed St. Peter’s square where about 70-thousand faithfuls congregated, together with over 170 from PNG.

Peter Senat, the son of ToRot's only daughter - Rufina Iamama, represented his family in presenting his grandfather’s relic on stage, before the “formula of canonization” or declaration of the saints by Pope Leo.

The Holy Father performed the canonization rites:

Sr. Celine Tirupia Tatamai

Granddaughter of St. Peter, Sr. Celine TIRUPIA Tatamai was among those who read the prayers of the faithful, in Tok Pisin.

Mass was celebrated following the canonization rites, where Cardinal Sir John Ribat was among other cardinals who celebrated the Holy Eucharist with the Pope Leo the 14th.

Pope Leo reminded those gathered that they have before them seven witnesses, the new Saints, who, with God’s grace, kept the lamp of faith burning.

The Holy Father reminded everyone of the need to pray to God always and that the new Saints will help them in their vocation to holiness.

St. Peter ToRot joins thousands other saints in the Catholic Church, who will be sought after for intercession through prayers.
