Milne Bay women go pink for health and awareness

Female employees at Milne Bay's Service Delivery Center came together in solidarity today, observing Pinktober and receiving free healthcare advice on keeping healthy, early detection, and behavioural change.
Staff from Alotau Provincial Hospital's cancer ward took center stage, the aim was to increase awareness and promote behaviour change for early detection of breast cancer, advocate for improved access to care and remember those who had fought valiantly the battle with cancer.
"We have many friends and family members - some currently undergoing treatment and others who have survived. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we decided to bring the awareness campaign to the workplace, knowing that many people are often too busy to attend such events elsewhere,” organiser Delen Bagita said.

Sr Sharon Aigoma from the Alotau Provincial Hospital cancer ward says they are always happy to disseminate information that can save lives and empower women to live safely, love their bodies, and be informed about the life choices they make.
“Even a small group can make a big difference. We’ve had a lot of questions, which is great; it helps us raise funds to buy ribbons and show support for women with breast cancer. It’s important for us to come out and encourage other women, especially those stuck in their offices, to step out, learn more, and be open about breast cancer,” said Sharon Aigoma from Alotau Provincial Hospital.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month each year, always a good time to highlight the importance of health promotion, early detection, and timely diagnosis linked to comprehensive treatment.
Breast cancer is a significant and rising public health concern in Papua New Guinea, often diagnosed at late stages and with poor outcomes due to limited resources and access to care.

The reminder to the group today- take onwership of your body and health,.do regular checks and learn to do self tests as safeguards.
