Papua New Guinea Basketball Federation [BFPNG] president David Peter has hit back at a storm of criticism over the naming of the men’s and women’s national teams, branding the claims of bias and unfairness as lies spread to stir trouble.

The federation faced a wave of backlash on social media after announcing the squads for next month’s Melanesian Cup in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Some users alleged players were forced to pay levies, cover their own airfares, and that selectors showed favoritism.

Peter rejected the allegations outright.

“These people are just trying to seek attention. Most of what they are saying is lies to create issues,” he told NBC News.
“Someone said BFPNG is charging levy fees. That is false. Someone else claimed players are paying for their airfares, but the federation is covering 50 percent plus accommodation. Others say there were no proper selectors, is not tru. There were 11 independent selectors who handled the process.”

He said critics had failed to provide evidence of bias despite being challenged.

“I have stated clearly that if anyone can prove bias, I will recall the selection. It’s been a week now and no one has provided anything,” Peter said.

The BFPNG boss also revealed that selections were based solely on recent performance during trials, not reputation.

“Some people think certain players should make the team because they like them or saw them play well before. But trials determined who was picked. The selection was done fairly,” he said.

A total of 24 players comprising 12 men and 12 women were confirmed, with three non-traveling reserves each. BFPNG is working to secure two national coaches ahead of the Melo Cup set from October 14-18.
