The Papua New Guinea Lewas touched down midday yesterday at Jackson’s International Airport to a proud welcome after being crowned winners of the ICC Women’s East Asia-Pacific [EAP] Qualifier in Suva, Fiji.

The PNG Lewas sealed their historic victory with a dominant nine-wicket win over Vanuatu in the grand final, booking their place at the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier.

With this big win, Papua New Guinea will join nine other nations in the Global Qualifier in Nepal, where four teams will secure a place in the Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales.

Competing nations include host's Nepal, Bangladesh, Scotland, United States of America, Thailand, Ireland, Netherlands, Zimbabwe, Namibia and PNG.

PNG Lewas Captain Brenda Tau expressed her pride in the team’s performance and gratitude to those who made the journey possible.

“I am so proud of our team for this victory. On the eve of our country’s Independence celebrations, this win is gold, we bring home pride in our national colours," Tau said.

"I want to thank our coaches, our team manager, and Cricket PNG for their continued support. To the media and especially our fans, your support has kept us going. This victory is for Papua New Guinea."

Lewas Coach Mahuru Dai also extended his independence message.“On behalf of the team, I wish Papua New Guinea a Happy Independence celebration this week. We are proud to fly the flag high," he said.

This victory adds to the spirit of PNG’s 50th Golden Jubilee Independence celebrations, marking sporting growth and also a unifying national moment.
