Jiwaka Show shines in PNG’s 50th Independence celebrations

The inaugural Jiwaka Show, staged on Tuesday in Minj to commemorate Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary, has been hailed as one of the finest celebrations ever hosted in the province.
The event brought together cultural groups from the Waghi Valley, Jimi, and Kambia, showcasing a colorful display of traditional and contemporary performances. The variety and vibrancy of the cultural presentations left many spectators in awe.
The atmosphere was further lifted by the sounds of kundu drums, aerial displays by a helicopter, and the sight of a massive national flag unfurled in the sky, evoking emotion and reminding many of the sacrifices made by PNG’s founding fathers, including Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and other national leaders.
Provincial Administrator Rick Kogen used the occasion to call on Jiwakans to look ahead to the next 50 years with determination. He said lasting progress would come not through politics alone, but through hard work, productivity, and commitment to the land.
Governor Simon Kaiwi thanked God for the establishment of Jiwaka as a separate province and paid tribute to past leaders who laid the foundations under the Western Highlands administration. He also acknowledged Jiwaka leaders who contributed at the national level, saying their dreams and aspirations continued to inspire the province today.
The show concluded peacefully, with police and auxiliary officers commended for maintaining order and ensuring the safety of participants and spectators.
