Lufa MP pays tribute to past leaders on PNG’s 50th Anniversary

Lufa MP and Minister for Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Simo Kilepa has paid tribute to the district’s founding leaders, depicting them as the pillars of Lufa and key contributors to the development of Eastern Highlands Province.
Speaking on the eve of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary, Kilepa said it was only fitting to recognise the pioneer leaders who represented Lufa in Parliament during the post-independence years and beyond.

A total of 11 leaders were acknowledged, including nine Open MPs, one Premier, and one Governor of Eastern Highlands Province. They include:
- Ugi Bititu [1964–1968]
- Pupuna Aruno [1968–1972]
- Sunivi Ottio [1972–1987]
- Jerry Kavori [1988–1992]
- Matthias Karani [1993–2002]
- Yawa Silupa [2007–2012]
- Jeffrey Kuave [2012–2017]
- Monique Kavori [2017–2023]
- Simon Kilepa [2022–present]

Also recognised were James Yanepa, Premier of Eastern Highlands [1982–1987], and Peti Lafanama, Governor of EHP [1997–2002], both hailed as influential figures in the province’s development.
“I would like to thank and pay tribute to these former leaders and their families for providing leadership that has inspired and contributed to the development of the district,” Kilepa said.
The commemoration also featured a flag-raising ceremony and cultural performances, with more than 20 tribes showcasing traditional songs, dances, and rituals to mark the Golden Jubilee.
