Undialu declares May 17 as official Hela Day

Hela Governor Philip Undialu has declared May 17 as the official Hela Day, marking the date in 2012 when Parliament passed legislation to establish Hela as a separate province.
Undialu made the announcement during Hela’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations yesterday, saying the day would now be gazetted and observed annually as a time to reflect on the province’s journey and strengthen unity among its people.
“For too long, this day has gone unrecognised. From now on, 17th May will be our official provincial celebration. A time to honour our journey, showcase our cultural talents, and strengthen unity among our people,” Undialu said.
As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, he also launched the inaugural Hiri Mali Wigman Dance Competition, which will see the four districts of Tari-Pori, Koroba-Lake Kopiago, Komo-Hulia, and Margarima compete on September 18 in what he believes as the first authentic showcase of Hela Wigman culture.
Undialu commended members of parliament, district development authority chief executive officers, public servants, and the people of Hela for ensuring peaceful and respectful celebrations across the province.
