Aitape Lumi District has proudly joined the nation in celebrating Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary, launching festivities today with a vibrant display of unity and patriotism.

The town came alive as motorcycles and bicycles draped in PNG’s black, red, and gold streamed from Raihu District Hospital into Aitape Town, officially signaling the start of a week of golden jubilee celebrations.

Town Manager Canisius Saweni declared the celebrations open, calling on citizens to mark the milestone responsibly and with pride.

“This is a time for unity, reflection, and pride. Let us celebrate responsibly as we honor 50 years of independence,” he said.

Acting District Administrator Jobs Tomur acknowledged the late start due to the by-election and the swearing-in of re-elected Member for Aitape Lumi Hon. Anderson Mise, but emphasized the significance of the community’s commitment.

“Our people showed true independence by taking the lead. They didn’t wait for funding, they started celebrating on their own,” Tomur said, praising the MP for securing support in time for the main events.

Festivities have already been rolling out in LLGs and schools, showcasing grassroots pride ahead of the main Independence program on September 16, which will conclude on September 17.

As PNG reflects on its golden journey of 50 years of nationhood, Aitape Lumi’s celebrations echo the national theme of unity, resilience, and pride in identity, reminding citizens that independence is not only about history but also about the people’s enduring spirit to shape the country’s future.
