Aitape Lumi Independence committee visits inmates at Vanimo CS facility

As part of the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations, the Aitape Lumi District Independence Organizing Committee made a special visitation to citizens of Aitape Lumi currently serving time at the Vanimo Correctional Services [CS] facility.
Led by Chairman Mr. Peter Ake, the delegation presented food and bathroom items to the inmates as a gesture of inclusion, recognizing that independence celebrations are for everyone.
This follows earlier visits by the committee to the Raihu District Hospital and the Disability Centre, where patients and people with special needs also received gifts.
Mr. Ake said although the gifts may be small, they carry a big message assuring the inmates that they are not forgotten.
“This is the independence gift from the people of Aitape Lumi to our people here in Vanimo CS. You are still part of us, and we remember you always,” he told the inmates.
He also thanked the CS Commanding Officers and staff for their ongoing care and support for inmates from Aitape Lumi District.
On behalf of the Correctional Services, Vanimo Inspector Patrick Kakukra expressed gratitude to the people of Aitape Lumi, the DDA, and the Independence Committee.
He said this was the first time a district had shown such kindness to its people in prison.
“There are 192 inmates currently serving here. For a district to remember its own people is the greatest gift—it inspires inmates to change for their good and for the good of their communities,” Inspector Kakukra said.
Speaking on behalf of the inmates, Mr. Ibathla Kanawia from Paup village in Aitape Lumi became emotional as he thanked the delegation.
“We are deeply touched by this gesture. To be remembered during this special 50th Independence Anniversary means a lot to us. After 50 years of Independence, this is the true meaning of doing good for our people.”
The visit was described as a historic and meaningful act of inclusivity, setting an example for other districts to follow.
