The Bintagor Goroka Lahanis rugby team held a cleanathon on Friday to promote a cleaner Goroka and raise awareness about littering during their break, showing their commitment to the community.

The Bintangor Senior rugby league players and the Under 19 Lahanis players, along with management and staff, started collecting rubbish from the MDC shop at West Goroka, up to 123, then to the old crossing, and up to the Market Papindo.

Then they crossed over to the Peace Park and collected trash, continued up to the main business areas, and ended in front of Bintagor Supermarket.

Team Manager Benjo Filele says they usually visit schools, hospitals, and the CIS Bihute as part of their community engagement programs.

Mr Fielele says the initiative was not the first time for the Lahanis team to undertake.

"The Bintagor Lahanis team used to clean the town a few years back, but we stopped.

"We are now reviving it and have included it in our programs", Mr Filele said.

The team manager further says that when the season started, they were struggling a bit, but eventually they picked up.

He says they're currently in the 5th placing on the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup ladder.

"We've played 11 games and have 7 more games to be played", he said.

Meantime, Bintagor Lahanis are on bye this weekend and on the 6th of July, they'll be playing against Waghi Tumbe in front of their home crowd at the National Sports Institute in Goroka.
