Newly elected Pope Leo XIV offered a heartfelt message of peace and unity during his first public address, pledging to guide a Church rooted in faithfulness to Jesus and the Gospel.

Appearing for the first time as the Successor of Peter from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV addressed the faithful gathered in Rome and viewers around the world with a solemn blessing.

“Peace be with you! Dearest brothers and sisters,” the new Pontiff declared, invoking the words of the risen Christ.

“The good shepherd who gave His life for the flock of God. I, too, would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts, to reach your families and all people, wherever they are; and all the peoples, and all the earth: Peace be with you."

He described this peace as one that is “disarming and humble and preserving peace. It comes from God. God, who loves all of us, without any limits or conditions.”

The Pope paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, saying: “Let us keep in our ears the weak but always brave voice of Pope Francis, who blessed Rome - the Pope who blessed Rome and the world that day on the morning of Easter."

“Allow me now to continue that same blessing,” he continued. “God loves us, all of us, evil will not prevail. We are all in the hands of God.”

Calling for courage and unity, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the Church’s mission to follow Christ and share His light with the world: “Without fear, united, hand in hand with God and among ourselves, we will go forward. We are disciples of Christ, Christ goes before us, and the world needs His light. Humanity needs Him like a bridge to reach God and His love."

The new Pope closed with a call to build bridges through dialogue and encounter, fostering peace among all people.

“Thank you, Pope Francis,” he said in conclusion, honoring the legacy of his predecessor.

In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Robert Francis Prevost was elected on Thursday as the 267th pontiff, becoming the first pope from the United States and North America.

A moderate voice within the Church and a close ally of Pope Francis, Prevost served for years as a missionary in Peru before his election. Upon assuming the papacy, he chose the name Leo XIV, signaling continuity with his predecessors while ushering in a new chapter of leadership.
