The total number of women graduating at the PNG University of Technology [UoT] continue to increase each year.

Chancellor of UoT, Sam Koim during the 57th graduation ceremony yesterday commended women for raising the standard in achieving the higher level of educational qualifications.

Koim said in 1980 UoT admitted 120 students into its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics [STEM] programs and now it has increased.

"Ms. Finkewe Zurenuoc was the only women surrounded by 119 men, she stood alone, but she stood with strength and vision.

"She went on to become a pioneering engineer and now serves as Pro Chancellor of the very institution where she once set record,"Koim said.

Fast forward to 2025, Koim said the landscape has changed.

"Today, women make up 39% of Unitech’s graduating class. They're not just showing up, they're standing out, excelling with honours and purpose," he said.

Koim further make comparison of women graduated in respective programs. That includes;

Applied Physics: 62.5% female.

Applied Sciences: 59.6% female

Mathematics & Computer Science: 51.8% female

Construction Management: 31.2% female

Electrical Engineering: 22.5% female

Mechanical Engineering: 20.9% female

Koim further added that in non-STEM fields, the rise is even more pronounced.

"Business Studies: 80 women to 83 men—near parity.

"This is more than a shift in statistics—it’s a shift in culture. The doors opened by pioneers like Ms. Zurenuoc are now welcoming a wave of women who are not just participating, but leading.

"They’re setting new standards, commanding respect, and proving that excellence knows no gender,"Koim said.

Koim urged men to consider this a wake-up call.

"The women are not waiting. If you hesitate, they’ll take the lead. It's Not a threat—but a challenge. Not to retreat—but to rise with them. Because when women rise, everyone rises.

"This moment is bigger than academic success. It’s a powerful message: talent is not defined by gender. And Unitech is proud to be the ground where this transformation is not just happening—but thriving."
