The Motu Koita Assembly [MKA]has responded to concerns about delays in the elections. Chairman Dadi Toka Jnr and Manager Mari Kila reassured the public, saying, “The Assembly Board and Administration have always been prepared for the elections, which were initially set for 2023.”

They explained that the MKA worked with the PNG Electoral Commission and NCD Administration to support the election process, with NCDC allocating K750,000.

However, they said, “K750,000 is not enough to conduct the MKA elections because the Electoral Commission’s estimates submitted to the NCDPEAC were up to K7 million.”

“The K7 million is supposed to be funded by the National Government under the National Budget. This has not happened for the last 3 years,” Dadi Toka Junior said.

Despite these budgetary challenges, they confirmed that K500,000 was approved to support the 2025 MKA Elections.

The MKA reiterated that conducting the elections is the National Government's responsibility, and adding the majority of the funds to conduct the election is the constitutional mandate of the PNG Electoral Commission through the National Government Budgetary process.

While there were issues with the electoral roll in 2023 and 2024, including missing names and logistical problems, the MKA has remained committed to supporting the elections.

“MKA rejects any allegations or assertions that it is involved in the continuous deferrals of the Motu Koita elections since 2023,” Dadi Toka Junior said.

As for the new Motu Koita seat, discussions are underway to address conflicts, including boundaries and overlapping responsibilities.

The Assembly is now awaiting official confirmation of the 2025 election dates from the PNG Electoral Commission.
