Last man standing, no more

The late Sir Julius Chan, affectionately known to Papua New Guineans as the last man standing, was laid to rest at 1:50 pm in his beloved Manmantinut, Huris home in Namatanai.

This marks the end of the 7 day program for the late Sir Julius as per his will.

His passing marks the end of a chapter for the country on the eve of its 50th independence anniversary.

Draped in the PNG flag and given a guard of honor by PNG defence force personnel, Sir Julius was escorted to his tomb site.

His official vehicle transported him for the last time, behind him, his wife Lady Stella, children and grandchildren in tow.

His two remaining siblings, Louisa and Michael joined in to farewell their brother.

A sea of black, his people of New Ireland formed groups on either side of his last journey down to his tomb.

Hundreds of his people with over 90 ministers, members, and Governors led by Prime Minister James Marape bade farewell to one of the last of the country's founding fathers.

A 21 men gun salute fitting to send off one of one of the great leaders of this country, was accorded him.

The last man standing is no more, but his great legacy lives on with calls and challenges for the future generation to carry on his great work and also try to emulate some of his great values.
