Hundreds of New Irelanders turned out at the residence of the late Sir Julius Chan, in Manmantinut, Huris, Namatanai to receive his casket and bid him farewell.

He was described as a people's leader, who will be sorely missed but whose great legacy will live on.

The type of leadership and influence the late Sir Julius Chan had on his people of New Ireland showed in the respect they paid when he passed.

His manmantinut residence was packed as his people paid their last respects and stayed overnight outside, as he lay for the last time on his home.

Former Deputy Governor for New Ireland Florence Stocken told NBC News, they salute him for his great service and that he will be missed.
