Different units of Police in National Capital District will ramp up security measures commencing 4pm till late night to ensure a peaceful and safe New Year’s Eve, with officers deploying citywide as part of Operation-Silva Merry Christmas and New Year.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika confirmed that the operation, which began earlier this month, will intensify starting at 4 p.m. today.
"Officers will set up roadblocks, conduct patrols, and collaborate with community neighborhood watch groups to deter criminal activities, protect lives, and safeguard property.
“Our focus is on increased visibility and strategic operations in key areas.
“We are targeting major settlements across the city, including Nine Mile, Eight Mile, ATS, Sabama, Kira Kira, Gerehu, Waigani, and Morata. Hanuabada village, the indigenous home of the Motuans, is also part of our priority areas for community engagement and awareness.” Superintendent Sika said.
Sika emphasized that the new year period remains unpredictable and urged residents to act responsibly.
He commended the public for their cooperation so far but stressed the need for heightened vigilance tonight and in the coming days.
Meanwhie to ensure accountability, Sika issued a stern warning to police officers against abusing their authority.
“Any officer found engaging in misconduct will be arrested. We are here to enforce the law, not to break it,” he said.
The Superintendent also urged residents to avoid behavior that could lead to trouble.
“One drink can lead to poor decisions, which might result in criminal activity. If you commit a crime, you will end up at the police station or, worse, in the morgue,” he warned.
Officers have been instructed to take swift action against any form of misconduct, including arresting individuals engaging in rowdy or illegal behavior.
“All our cells are open and ready, and arrests will be made for both minor and serious offenses.
"If you want to avoid being charged, be a responsible citizen—be a good mother, father, son, or daughter. It’s time for change,” Sika said.
As part of the operation, Sika urged police officers to perform their duties ethically, remain vigilant, and uphold public trust.
He also called on residents including community leaders to cooperate with police efforts and support initiatives aimed at ensuring safe and peaceful celebrations.
The operation will continue through January 5, with police urging everyone to prioritize safety and help create an atmosphere of respect and harmony as the city rings in the new year.
