U19 Garamuts and Lewas squad named for international outing

Cricket PNG has announced the teams for the U19 Garmut's and Lewa's who will participate in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier and the ODI Tri-Series respectively.
The U19 men's will compete the East Asia Pacific tournament in Samoa to qualify for the World Cup whilst the women's national team will face Scotland and Netherlands in a Tri-Series from August 1-8.
The regional qualifier will be held in Samoa where Papua New Guinea will play the host nation, Vanuatu and Indonesia.
Domestic Cricket Manager, Lakani Oala was confident CPNG selected a side that will represent the country well with 8 new faces in the team.
"We are looking forward to getting back into the world cup qualifications process so Samoa is the start of that," he said.
"There are some promising young players who have come through the ranks and it will be interesting to see what they bring to the table.
There are eight [8] players debuting in their first international fixture who are from various domestic cricket associations of which several were identified through the CPNG talent ID selections from basic entry level through the BSP School’s Cricket and the Malolo development programs.
The U19 Garamuts depart for Brisbane on Saturday 27th July where they will be based for a weeklong training camp and practice matches before travelling to Samoa on 3rd August.
Meanwhile, the PNG Lewas team travel on August 1 where they will play 4 One Day Internationals and two T20 Internationals against Netherlands and Scotland.
Lewas head coach, David Drew said the team is looking forward to the challenge and have maintained a rigorous training schedule since returning from Zimbabwe and UAE earlier this year, where they competed well on tour and also during the Isuzu T20 Smash held more recently.
"They are looking forward to playing the upcoming matches and testing their skills against quality opposition," he said.
"The team will be led by Brenda Tau and Sibona Jimmy. Both players are developing their leadership skills which has been evident on and off the field. The entire team is excited to represent their country and Families on this tour and do everyone proud.”
Lewas captain Brenda Tau will spearhead the group in her second leadership stint with assistance from Sibona Jimmy.
“Preparations for the upcoming tournament have been great for the team so far, the coaches have been doing an outstanding job.
"The girls have been putting in the effort and the teamwork has been great! There is amazing team energy amongst the girls at each training session so so far all good with our preparations and definitely looking forward to the tournament.”
