Rugby League program gradually changing behavior of students

The PNG League Bilong Laif program is having a positive impact on Gerehu Primary School with improved student behavior.
With a total enrollment of 815 students in lower primary, Gerehu Primary remains one of the oldest schools in the nation's capital.
The classrooms often accommodating an average of 45 students, reflect the norm in the PNG educational landscape.
Among the dedicated teachers is Mr. Saven Nawen, from Kompiam in Enga Province, in his third year of teaching.
Mr. Nawen faces the daily challenge of managing student attitudes in his classroom of 49 students, consisting of 26 girls and 23 boys.
“Gerehu Primary is big. Managing student attitudes here presents a significant challenge," he admitted.
"But I strive to do my best, though at times it's an uphill battle."
This academic term, the League Bilong Laif [LBL] program's game development officers have been actively engaged at Gerehu Primary School.
They aim to promote education, health, respect, social inclusion, and gender equality through rugby league.
Collaborating closely with teachers like Mr. Nawen, the LBL team inspires children to embrace school, develop positive behaviors, and foster mutual respect.
"The attitudes are changing," Mr. Nawen observed.

He credited the LBL program for the notable shifts in student behavior, especially during their engaging sessions.
"I've witnessed significant changes in my students. When the LBL team arrives, the students are visibly elated. This program has greatly improved attendance in my class, tackling absenteeism head-on."
Nawen emphasized the noticeable improvement in the classroom atmosphere, with boys and girls learning to respect each other.
"I've witnessed behavioral transformations in my students, and that brings me immense joy," he remarked.
Mr. Nawen acknowledged the program for its positive impact on his student's behavior and academic engagement.
"I wholeheartedly endorse this program for its role in reshaping our students' behavior, fostering a love for learning, and boosting attendance,” he said.
He envisions an expanded reach for the LBL program, extending its benefits to more schools and gaining parental support.
“I believe LBL has the potential to empower our students, paving the way for a brighter future.”
